Character

Male Lizardfolk Bloodrager

Played by Ian.

Background

Kassar is the third son of a Lizardfolk chieftain. A long time ago, one of Kassar's ancestors made a compact with a demon and mated with him. The royal family claim that this demon was a Balor, one of the mightier denizens of the Abyss, but their enemies whisper that it was only a lesser demon. Regardless of this, the resulting offspring all had black scales when they hatched from their eggs, instead of the usual green colouration. They also had a tendency to manifest magical powers (becoming sorcerers with the demonic bloodline), as well as a marked lean towards the evil alignment of their demonic forebear.

However, every now and then a descendent of the Abyssal ancestor is born who at first appears to be a normal lizardfolk, with green scales. They usually display the chaotic side of the demon’s nature but, other than this, they seem unremarkable, at least initially… Once they reach maturity, when provoked into anger, they fall into a period of madness, fully indulging their chaotic nature. During this bloodrage, the demon’s influence finally becomes apparent. Their claws grow bigger, their scales turn black and they become stronger and tougher. The first time they enter this state, they have no control over their actions, and can often do severe damage or even kill the object of their anger. Later, they learn to exert some control over this process. They can even learn to cast spells, drawing on their demonic bloodline, but this is subordinate to their combat prowess. As they grow in power, the transformation they undergo whilst raging causes them to resemble the demon more and more. Basically, they are a more physical manifestation of the demon’s abilities.

These Abyssal bloodragers are often mistrusted by their kinfolk and usually end up being driven from the tribe due to the trouble they cause. This is made more likely as every few years the state of madness they experienced during their first rage resurfaces, and they can spend days or even weeks in an altered state of near insanity, often coming out of this condition in strange surroundings, with little or no memory of what has occurred during their chaotic spree. The other players encounter Kassar when he has just ended one of these periods of mental illness. His family had him arrested and then locked up in the asylum. He is still of royal blood, so they don’t want to kill him, but they do want him safely out of the way, so that he doesn’t embarrass the tribe any further.

Kassar has come to blame his demonic ancestor for all his woes, and really doesn’t like demons, exposing and killing them whenever he can. As well as the blood madness, Kassar also had frightening dreams during his childhood, where he would be falling into gargantuan canyons or yawning chasms, all the while hearing whispers in a strange language. The dreams were a vision of the outer layers of the Abyss, and the whispers were in Abyssal, the language of demons. He came to understand this tongue, and would occasionally use a demonic word or phrase without thinking. The other hatchlings both mocked and feared him when he inadvertently spoke words in Abyssal, and he was frequently bullied. He also has a fear of falling, but faces this fear by jumping from tall places, saving himself at the last possible moment by casting a feather fall spell. Kassar is a physical being, and does not care for learning. The exception to this is his talent for learning new languages, probably due to his bilingual background, and he often carries a phrasebook or book of grammar with him.
